Diego Velázquez’s Study of the Head of Apollo reflects his deep skilfully balancing the realism of Spanish Baroque with Italian Renaissance influences.  Using traditional Old Master techniques, Velázquez began with a monochrome underpainting and built depth through delicate glazes, creating luminous, sculptural skin tones and shadows.  This study reveals his growing mastery of psychological depth in portraiture. His loose, expressive brushwork captures subtle gradations of light, shadow, and texture, conveying both form and emotion with striking economy.  Velázquez’s approach in this work would go on to influence later masters such as Goya and Manet.
